What size frame for your photo?
Picking a size is where most people freeze. Here's a plain-English guide to picture frame sizes and how to choose the right one for your photo and your wall.
The "right" size isn't about the photo alone — it's about the photo, the wall, and the furniture around it working together. Get it right and a single frame anchors a whole room; get it wrong and even a beautiful print looks lost or cramped. Here's how to think about it.
The common picture frame sizes, and what each is for
Small: 5×7 and 8×10 inches
Perfect for shelves, desks, side tables and gallery-wall clusters. On their own on a large wall they'll look lost — but grouped, or on a mantel, they're ideal. An 8×10 with a mount is the classic "framed photo" size.
Medium: 12×12 and 16×20 inches
The most versatile wall sizes. A 12×12 square suits Instagram-style photos and pet portraits; 16×20 gives a proper feature-piece feel without dominating. These are the sizes most people should default to for a single framed photo on a wall.
Large: 18×24 and 20×20 inches
Statement pieces. These hold their own above a sofa, bed or fireplace and become the focal point of a room. Give them space — a large frame on a small, cluttered wall fights everything around it.
A simple rule for wall placement
If you're hanging a frame above furniture — a sofa, bed, sideboard — aim for the frame (or a group of frames) to span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture below. Narrower than that and it looks like an afterthought; wider and it feels top-heavy.
Quick trick: cut a sheet of newspaper to the frame size and tape it to the wall. Live with it for a day. It's amazing how often the size you *thought* you wanted turns out too small.
Don't forget orientation
A portrait photo wants a portrait frame; a landscape shot wants a landscape frame. It sounds obvious, but forcing a landscape photo into a portrait frame means cropping out half the image. Square photos are the most forgiving — they suit square frames like 12×12 and 20×20 beautifully.
The mount changes everything
A mount (the border between the picture and the frame) makes a frame look considerably larger and more premium for the same print size. A 12×12 print with a generous mount has real wall presence; the same print with no mount feels casual. If you want impact without paying for a huge print, a mount is the cheapest way to get it.
